Days Out in Liverpool

What better way to start your day in Liverpool than breakfast at the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool? With the first City Explorer bus not set to leave until an hour, this gives us plenty of time to enjoy a delicious breakfast and make sure we have enough energy for the rest of the day.

One of the great options that you can choose is Gusto, a lovely Italian restaurant with views of the famous dock. On the menu are your tried and tested breakfast dishes, such as a full English and Eggs Benedict, and mouthwatering pancakes topped with tasty goodness such as Nutella and Ginger Sauce. You should also give the Avocado Burger a try; it tastes as incredible as it looks! For drinks, you can’t go wrong with a Cappuccino to warm yourself up. On days when the sun is scorching, the restaurant's juice options are incredibly refreshing. If you’re a bit adventurous, then perhaps 9 am isn’t a bad time to try a Torino Bloody Mary - plus, cocktails are 2 for 1 when purchasing a main breakfast dish!

For a classic coffee house experience, head straight to Ruben's Coffee Shop. This independent venue has fresh-roasted Columbian and Honduran-sourced coffee. You can also order a range of delicious snacks, soups and cakes. How about another option? After all, the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool is full of beautiful choices! Peaberry Coffee House & Kitchen is an independent artisan venue that serves everyone's breakfast favourites, including French toast, smoothie bowls, pancakes, burgers, and much more. Peaberry also offers a good choice of vegan and vegetarian options. No matter what, you're spoilt for choice at the docks. After replenishing your morning energy, wherever you decide to go, you can take a nice peaceful stroll around the docks before hopping on our bus at 10 pm.

So with breakfast taken care of, it's time to catch the first bus of the day just a few seconds away from the dock. An enthusiastic guide will be happy to welcome you onboard, offering some entertaining commentary as the bus begins its journey from the Albert Dock towards the Pier Head. Take a seat on the top floor to catch a lovely breeze as you go! What’s a good remedy for burning calories and settling a full stomach? Shopping, of course!

The first major stop on our tour is the Liverpool One complex, the best place to shop in the city. The biggest dilemma here is where do you begin without taking up too much time. Liverpool One has everything from fashion outlets to jewellery shops and electronic stores. Here are some of the options that you can consider depending on what it is you require...

Clothing

Liverpool One truly shines in fashion with an abundance of shops selling men's, women's and children's clothing. The Adidas store sells the brand's high-end range of sportswear, including training gear and classy trainers. Reiss is another well-known brand based here where you can treat yourself to stylish outfits. Looking for new shoes? You can check out the dedicated Dr Martens shop. Other honorary mentions include Flannels, Jack Wolfskin and New Look.

Electronic

Is there a better feeling than opening up a shiny new tech product? For phones, Samsung and Apple both have large stores where you can try out the latest devices before committing to a deal. EE, Three and O2 are a few of the networks with their stops - hop between the three to find yourself the perfect phone deal. Are you a gamer? GAME sells all the latest blockbuster games and next-gen hardware. Finally, CEX and HMV have fantastic offers on the best electronic and entertainment products.

Home & Garden

If you need to decorate the house or garden, you can't go wrong with visiting the huge John Lewis & Partners superstore. Across several stories, you'll find departments for home and kitchenware, lighting, gardens, and much more. ARKET is another homeware store that sells a range of carefully curated products within a unique and Nordic-inspired environment. Make sure all your home caffeine needs are sorted at the Nespresso store!

Health & Beauty

Take time out of your day to satisfy all of your self-care needs. There are several shops in Liverpool One dedicated to health, beauty and jewellery. Holland & Barrett and Superdrug sell everything from vitamins and dietary supplements to skincare products. To smell that bit nicer, you can pay a visit to The Body Shop and The Perfume Shop. Lads can enjoy a haircut like no other at Barber Barber, where they will be treated like kings. Last of all, to treat yourself or a loved one with some new luxury jewellery, you can consider Goldsmiths, H. Samuel and Pandora.

With some light shopping done, it's a good time as any to head to the museum district for a bit of a history lesson. Museums and art galleries are always an excellent place to chill out for a few hours or to help further your child's education. As Liverpool is a city that shines when it comes to culture, it should be no surprise that there are endless amounts of choices for enjoying exciting exhibitions and viewing magnificent collections.

You will find venues right across the city, but for this Liverpool day out section, we will focus on one area in particular. Our tour bus stops on William Brown Street with several museums and galleries on the doorstep. As soon as you step off the bus, you'll be left in awe at the incredible architecture on offer. This part of the city is known for its iconic buildings and has become a popular filming location for blockbusters like The Batman and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

There are several places to check out here, including the World Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool Central Library and St George's Hall. Best of all, each one is completely free to access!

Walker Art Gallery

The Walker Art Gallery may be somewhat of an unknown to a lot of visitors compared to the other buildings, so it's a good decision to make this the first priority. The gallery has a range of collections and world-class art. The incredible paintings include everything from European Renaissance art to Impressionist pieces by Monet and work from Dante Gabriel Rossetti. As well as paintings, you can expect to see sculptures made across generations, from the 18th century to the First World War. Most recently, the gallery has embraced the digital era with video and animation art.

World Museum

You only have to take a few steps outside and you'll find yourself in the lobby of the World Museum. This museum is always worth a visit and seems to have something new each time you go. There are live insects and fish, dinosaur skeletons, planetarium events, and much more - it has it all! The museum is a must if you and the kids want a day out discovering treasures from around the world, exploring outer space or meeting live creatures. It guarantees a fun-filled day for no cost whatsoever (except for paid special exhibitions).

Liverpool Central Library

The Liverpool Central Library was established in 1860 and re-opened in 2013 following significant redevelopment, making it one of the country's largest public libraries. The library is open all year round (except for bank holidays) and entry is free. You can see a range of rare book collections, admire the gorgeous Picton Reading Room, and study unique archives dating back to the 13th century. The library also has Wi-Fi access, a games area and 150 computers.

St George's Hall

St George's Hall truly is a historical building. Just opposite Lime Street Station, you won't miss the venue's gigantic appearance and neoclassical style. St George's Hall is widely considered to be one of the finest neoclassical buildings in the world. It is a Grade I listed building that currently hosts a range of events, live performances, weddings, exhibitions, and immersive experiences. It is free to enter the Visitor Centre and you can also book tickets for a tour where you will learn fascinating stories and view the building's catacombs, cells and stunning rooms.

We intend to check out Liverpool’s two cathedral’s during the day’s activities, but first up is the Metropolitan Cathedral. Built in 1967, the Metropolitan is still described as the city’s ‘new’ cathedral and is the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool. The cathedral has earned nicknames from locals such as the ‘Catholic Cathedral’, ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’ and ‘The Pope’s Launching Pad’.

The cathedral is recognised by its unusual shape, a feature which helps it form a unique section of the Liverpool skyline, and the building is quite a sight to behold. As soon as you walk through the doors you’ll be surprised at the interior of the cathedral. The large, circular environment combines stunning architecture, immersive lighting and iconic art to deliver a historic and authentic yet modern place of worship.

With the morning's breakfast well and truly digested, it's time to head back on the bus and make the short journey to a nearby pub or restaurant for a bite to eat and some delightful refreshments! Our next stop is just down the road from the Metropolitan Cathedral and outside the iconic Philharmonic Pub. Neighbouring Liverpool's famous concert hall of the same name, the Philharmonic Dining Rooms isn't your typical public house. Instead, this pub combines traditional character and hospitality with a lavish style to deliver a high-quality experience. Here, you can quash your appetite for the rest of the day with some of the most classic British dishes. For starters, you can enjoy the soup of the day or even a smoked salmon. When you're ready for the main course, this pub serves traditional fish & chips, steak pie, mixed grill and a range of classic burgers. If you fancy sharing, you can order a platter. Do you have what it takes to handle a dessert? The lemon tart and sticky toffee pudding are two of our favourites!

While the City Explorer bus stops right outside this pub, making it a convenient place to visit, your options aren't limited here! We're currently situated smack bang in the middle of the city's Knowledge Quarter. Within walking distance are the stylish Buyers Club and The Art School venues. The Buyers Club is a bar and restaurant combination where you can enjoy Italian food, live music and a relaxed atmosphere. As for The Art School, this stunning restaurant guarantees fine dining with freshly made products. If another pub is what you want, then you won't have to travel far! The Caledonian is a traditional corner pub that offers everything from pub meals and cask ales to live music nights. If you’re not already spoilt for choice, Bold Street is just a short walk away. This lively street has everything from quaint cafes to popular fast food and multi-cultural restaurants. You can even pick up a takeaway on the way from Nabzy’s, without a doubt Liverpool’s favourite chicken takeaway!

Re-energised, it’s time to check out the next place on our must-see list, the ‘old’ cathedral. The Anglican Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Liverpool and is the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain. In fact, it is also the third tallest building in Liverpool which makes it a great place to catch sightseeing views. If you manage to book a tower experience, you’ll be able to see some of the best panoramic views of the city.

The exterior of this building portrays an imposing figure and features as a prominent sight in Liverpool’s skyline. Compared to the modern architecture of the Metropolitan, the Anglican Cathedral is much more in line with the appearance of a traditional religious building. The interior of this cathedral is truly stunning. With its incredible architecture, stained glass windows and inspired art, this is a location you should definitely be visiting.

Our next destination is St Luke’s Church, or as it is more commonly known by locals, the Bombed Out Church. This iconic landmark is on the edge of the Ropewalks district and has quite a history. The church was bombed in 1941 during the Liverpool Blitz when an incendiary device caused a blaze which left just a burnt-out shell of the building. Following the incident, the roof collapsed, the stained glass burst from within, and several tower bells fell to the ground. Since the bombing, the church has been left in its current state to act as a memorial for those who died during the war. The church is open to visitors to see a piece of history with their own eyes and pay respects to the memorial.

Since 2007, St Luke’s Church has become a site for entertainment, art and community spirit as much as a historical landmark. As a visitor, there’s a constant flow of exhibitions and events to check out all year round, both inside and outside the grounds. Events include open-air screenings of cultural hits like Romeo & Juliet and Casablanca, live concerts and more. The church's present approach is described as using the "power of the arts to affect change" through events that can enrich and transform people's lives. Going forward, the church has secured its future and will proceed with plans to develop opportunities for education. Organisers will offer 20 volunteer roles with the aim of engaging the local community. Site improvements are also planned, including a children's play area and a vegetable garden.

The Bombed Out Church is at the very top of Liverpool’s vibrant Bold Street, so there are plenty of opportunities to do some shopping or dining at some smaller and more cultural venues when compared to Liverpool One.

Before time runs out on our fantastic day out in Liverpool, we have some time to head to the vibrant Baltic Triangle in the south part of town. As far as unique areas bustling with creativity and artistic vision is concerned, this stop completely ticked all our boxes. The Baltic Triangle is perhaps more out the way than the other destinations we've visited, but you can tell that the area benefits.

Cains Brewery Village

At the heart of the Baltic Triangle is the incredible Cains Brewery Village. In this place, independent thinkers and innovators can come together to use workspaces and venues to bring their ideas to life. It is also the home of several fantastic traders, from bars and food vendors to crazy golf attractions, some of which we will talk about below. The site was once a brewery until it closed in 2013. Following its closure, it was transformed into the leisure and retail attraction that we know today.

Pubs, Bars & Restaurants

There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from here, each featuring its own quirky atmosphere and themed environments. For starters, there's the Baltic Social. The Baltic Social promises to combine quality food, boss music and belter drinks. Then there's Birdies, an outdoor cocktail bar like no other, plus the Botanical Garden, a true hidden gem! Other bars you may want to visit include the Black Pearl, Yellow Sub and Hippie Chic. Lively event spaces include Camp and Furnace, Content and District. For a unique bingo experience, you won't want to miss Bongo's Bingo. We recommend the Peaky Blinders bar if you're a television fanatic. You can enjoy Chinese cuisine at Lu Ban or a small bite to eat at the Ryde bicycle cafe. There are simply too many bars and restaurants for us to mention!

Vintage Shops

After a quick drink, we decide to walk around some of the shops that sell everything from antique furniture to clothing. The Baltic Triangle is known for its vintage shops and independent retailers, and you will often find them based in unusual buildings! One example is the Vintage Barn, selling everything from a Victorian chest of drawers to retro chairs. There's also Red Brick Vintage, a vintage warehouse that has an amazing range of whacky items, including homeware, clothing and memorabilia.

Fun Activities

The Baltic Triangle is very much so tailored towards a young audience, so of course, there are plenty of fun activities to do here! You can start with Ghetto Golf which allows you to play crazy golf as you've never played before. The 18-hole course guarantees quirky-themed holes, captivating graffiti artwork, delicious street food, and exceptional cocktails. There is the Sugar and Dice cafe for board game enthusiasts where you can make new friends, play hundreds of board games, and tuck into homemade snacks. One of the recent newcomers to the Baltic Triangle is ArCains. ArCains is a gaming arcade where you can play some of the best classic games, including Guitar Hero, Pac-Man, Mario Kart, Rampage, Street Fighter, and Frogger. To try out your skating skills, head to the New Bird Skatepark. Finally, explore the area, and you'll come across all sorts of street art, including the famous Liverpool Wings by artist Paul Curtis.

Baltic Food Market

Just before hopping on the bus towards our last stop, it's a good chance as any to grab a quick bite at the Baltic Food Market! The market hosts traders from some of the best businesses around the city, providing you with the opportunity to sample worldwide cuisine. It's the perfect stop for groups with fussy eaters as everyone can pick what they want to eat! There's delicious menu items like halloumi fries and bubble waffles to frozen gin slush, gyros and wood-fired pizza. The traders include Beef on the Block, Christakis, Pattersons, Little Furnace, The Midnight Delivery... and many more!

And so your ultimate day out in Liverpool onboard our bus is drawing to a close. As the bus makes the short journey from the Cains Brewery Village towards the M&S Bank Arena, you can enjoy the last few sights on our tour. However, your day out isn't quite ready to end just yet!

While our buses are done for the day, with the sun still high in the sky and the fresh wind providing a cool breeze, there's still plenty that you can do in and around the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. Explore the Docks

First of all, if you haven't already, now is the perfect time to explore the very best of the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. The atmosphere is usually electric around this time, and the temperatures are not too cold. You can enjoy every peaceful second while taking a relaxing stroll around the docks. There are several beautiful sights to behold, including a range of fascinating statues. Some of the monuments you will find include a Billy Fury statue, the HMS Conway Anchor and the Lusitania Propeller. There's also the colourful Liverpool Mountain artwork by Ugo Rondione featuring bright rocks piled on top of each other. Don't forget to watch the boats come and go, and make sure you see the unique views looking out towards the Wirral.

Food & Drink

You've had lunch, but it's nearly time for dinner! The good news is that the docks have everything to accommodate people of all tastes. You can enjoy everything from seasonal food to cocktails, coffee and cakes. First of all, there's Maray, a Middle Eastern restaurant servicing delicious small plates alongside great cocktails and wine. Are you a fan of Mexican cuisine? You can try Madre, which offers mouthwatering dishes such as tacos, Jalisco style shrimp and beef short rib birria. Miller and Carter is a popular steakhouse serving succulent meat with tasty sauces and accompaniments. A hard day's work is best washed down with refreshing beverages at The Pumphouse, a classic pub in a Grade II listed former pumphouse. Truth be told, there are too many places for us to mention!

Visit a Museum

Earlier on, we mentioned the museum distinct in the centre of town, but the waterfront has its own extensive collection of museums that you can visit. The Maritime Museum is the place to learn about Liverpool's seafaring past and discover more about life at sea. Liverpool is not shy to shine the light on the dark past of human beings, as evidenced by the International Slavery Museum. This museum tells the untold stories of enslaved people and provides you with the opportunity to learn more about contemporary slavery. Art fanatics will no doubt want to pay a visit to the world-famous Tate Liverpool art gallery. Other museum highlights include The Beatles Story, RIBA North, the British Music Experience, and of course, the Museum of Liverpool.

Fun Activities

If you still have some fun left in you, there are plenty of exciting activities to take part in around the docks. Don't mind getting a bit wet? One of the best attractions that you can look to is the Wild Shore (aka Adventure Dock) aqua park. This family-friendly attraction provides an inflatable water obstacle course with slides, trampolines, rafts, and more. If you prefer to keep dry, you and a small group can head to Escape Hunt. Escape Hunt is an escape room for up to 6 people, offering unique challenges where the aim is to find the exit within 60 minutes. The kids will love the Victorian Carousel, a traditional carousel with colourful horses. The Pier Head regularly hosts seasonal events such as summer and winter festivals, so keep your eyes peeled and plan ahead. Finally, don't forget to grab a gift or souvenir at one of the small shops dotted around the docks!

The O2 Academy is one of the best venues in Liverpool for enjoying live music. The venue is nestled away in a quiet side street by Lime Street station, so it's no surprise if you've not yet caught a glimpse! The O2 Academy is run by the Academy Music Group and offers music lovers a wide range of performances. There is capacity for up to 1,200 people and 5 bars where you can buy a beverage. Royal Court Theatre

Hot Water Comedy Club is one of the best promoter of comedians from across the world. As well as regular online content and events throughout the UK, the club has a dedicated venue on Hardman Street. It is free to access the venue Monday to Thursday, all you need to do is book a ticket to secure your space. You can expect to see stand-ups from comedians like Paul Smith, Phil Chapman, Christian Reilly, and Justin Moorhouse.

Liverpool Olympia

On the outskirts of the city centre is the Liverpool Olympia, a venue that was first conceived back in 1905 as a purpose-built indoor circus and variety theatre. To this day, the Olympia hosts a variety of events such as boxing, concerts and dances. Highlights for 2022 include Peter Doherty, Placebo and UB40.
